Acne Treatment with Benzoyl Peroxide and Topical Niacinamide

Factsheet Add comments

Benzoyl peroxide is very effective in killing the bacteria that causes redness and inflammation of the pores. We usually see inflamed pores in the form of zits and breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide can also dry up the sebum buildup inside the pores thus reducing the proliferation of acne causing bacteria. Although benzoyl peroxide is effective in treating acne, users suffer from skin irritation which turns the skin red and scaly. Our site always recommends the use of 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide because it is just as effective as the 5% formulation but it is less irritating.

The application of topical niacinamide solution or gel reduces the dryness, irritation, redness and scaling of the skin because niacinamide is potent anti-inflammatory agent. Topical niacinamide also moisturizes the skin by increasing ceramides and fatty acids in the skin. This moisturizing action of niacinamide is very helpful in counteracting the drying effect of benzoyl peroxide on the skin.

Materials:

2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide Gel ( Panoxyl, Benzac ) Do not use Benzoyl Peroxide cream or solution
5% Topical Niacinamide Gel ( Metazene ) or 5% Topical Niacinamide Solution ( Homemade )

Procedure:

1. Remove facial dirt and oil by using ordinary soap and water and towel dry your face.
2. Apply the topical niacinamide gel or topical niacinamide solution on the face and allow it to be absorbed in the face for 10 minutes.
3. Apply Benzoyl Peroxide on the face and leave it there for at least 1 hour before washing it.
4. If you have a very sensitive skin or dry skin, reapply topical niacinamide gel after 6 or12 hours.

Notes:

Benzoyl Peroxide cream is discouraged since it is slowly absorbed in the skin compared to Benzoyl Peroxide Gel. Benzoyl Peroxide Gel is thus more effective.

Precautions:

Consult your doctor first if you are pregnant, lactating or could become pregnant during the use of this type of acne treatment. This acne medication is not intended to be used on children.
